National Institute of Immunohaematology (NIIH) has a chequered history of research in Transfusion Medicine and Haematology spanning over more than half a century. Starting as a small Blood Group Reference Centre (BGRC) in one of the nondescript rooms of the KEM Hospital blood bank in Mumbai way back in 1957, it evolved as one of the finest Institutes for conducting research in Haematology & Transfusion Medicine in the country.

Incorporating research work in the areas of Molecular Biology, Transfusion Medicine, Haemolglobinopathy, Thrombosis & Haemostasis, Immunology, Stem Cell Biology, Cytogenetics, HLA and Immunogenetics, Red Cell Membrane Biology, Enzymopathies, Prenatal Diagnosis, Paediatric Immunodeficiencies, Leucocyte and Platelet Biology this Institute has it all and should be a mecca for young aspiring research workers from all over the country.

Working closely with the Haematology Department at KEM Hospital NIIH is involved in training DM (Clinical Haematology) students and has facilities for training M.Sc & Ph.D programmes in Biochemistry and Applied Biology under Mumbai University . The Institute recently received recognition from West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) for Ph D programmes in Haematology, Transfusion Medicine and Biotechnology from the year 2008.

NIIH is also involved in several multicentric research programmes and scientists of this institute have been acclaimed nationally as well as internationally for the quality of their research work. The Institute is also a WHO recognized training centre for Transfusion Medicine and recognized International Haemophilia Training Centre (IHTC) by World Federation of Haemophilia. Our Institute at present publishes approximately 35-45 research papers per year mostly in International peer reviewed journals. Many of our students regularly win laurels in various National Conferences. NIIH is a dynamic institution and has the vision to develop into one of the finest International Research Centres for Haematology & Transfusion Medicine research and seeks collaboration from able International bodies from time to time.

The Institute always keeps its research programmes current and topical and like a living organism has the ability to adapt perfectly to the changing scenario of medical research in the world. I take immense pride in my scientific and non scientific staff. Without their hard work this Institute would not have reached where it is today.

I hope this Institute will keep on scaling further heights of achievements in future and the younger generation will find in this Institute an attractive place of work, to be a part of it in our progress to help ailing humanity. We have always believed in the ancient Sanskrit word “Charaibeti” i.e. “Move onward march forward” and have adopted it as the motto of the Institute.
